Gold Standard 2008 Community Service Award

Purpose: To encourage home schooled high school speakers 1) to use their speaking skills in service to their communities; and 2) to take their message of hope to the general public, while their youth gives them an unusual platform.
Eligibility: Students must be 1) between 12 and 19 years of age as of January 1, 2008; 2) Home schooled at least 51% of the time; 3) not enrolled in any public-school hybrid (HOPE, Options, K-12, etc), or accepting any public school monies.
Eligible Activities: You may list activities such as work for political campaigns, teaching Sunday School, volunteering at museums, libraries and legislatures, etc. provided your primary activity involved public speaking. You may not use activities in support of tournaments in which you were a competitor, such as compiling ballot packs. You may not use any activity for which you received payment. You may list more than one activity on your application, providing you list a separate description and accounting of hours for each activity. You may only list activities in which you participated during the past year from January 2007- January 2008.
Judging: Entries will be evaluated on service activity’s creativity, longevity of the activity, and its impact on the community. Judges will be dignitaries from higher education, the military, government, the media or the church, who are themselves known for their public service. Judges will not be given the names of the students, only their ages and gender. Judges’ rankings will be totaled together to determine the winners. Judges’ decisions are final.
